Court in Pakistan Orders investigations in sources of income of Sehba Musharraf

A new controversy has started in Pakistan after a progressive daily Pakistan Today has published photographs of Sehba Musharaf toasting with the Indian prime minister. The photograph features a story of questionable sources of income of the wife of Pakistan’s former military dictator.

Begum Sehba Musharraf extends to toast with Indian Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee at the banquet at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi (July 14, 2001). Pakistan has fought three wars with India over Kashmir and Sehba Musharraf is the wife of Pakistan's military dictator.

Sources of income for the wealth accumulated by Sehba Musharraf, the wife of Pakistan’s former military dictator, are not known. A Special Anti-Terrorism Court in Rawalpindi has directed the authorities on Saturday (October 6, 2012) to investigate the sources of income of Sehba Musharraf, wife of former military ruler Pervez Musharraf.

The special ATC issued the directive during the hearing of a petition against the freezing of the former president’s bank accounts and other assets.

During the hearing, Sehba Musharraf’s counsel, Advocate Ilyas Siddiqui, in his arguments said that Pervez Musharraf had “gifted” the Chak Shehzad farm house to Sehba Musharraf two years ago.

Responding to which, Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) prosecutor Chaudhry Zulfiqar Ali inquired as to why Pervez Musharraf was still registered as the farm house’s owner in the Capital Development Authority records if he had “gifted” it to his wife.

Furthermore, the FIA prosecutor added that the former military ruler had been declared an absconder and possessed a total of 16 bank accounts, out of which seven were joint accounts. After hearing the counsels’ arguments, the court issued a directive calling to investigate the sources of income of Sehba Musharraf and adjourned the hearing until Oct 20.

Sehba had filed the petition in Sept 2011 seeking a stay on the court’s order to confiscate the properties and freeze the accounts of her husband in the Benazir Bhutto assassination case.

She had said the orders against her husband declaring him an absconder and attachment of his properties be withdrawn or recalled and the attached property be released to the petitioner.

Corruption in Pakistan is rampant and Politicians, government servants and clerics are hand in glove for financial and personal gains.  Post dated October 7, 2012
